About ScanPlan
Built on practice.
Backed by research.
Driven by innovation.
ScanPlan grew from a straightforward observation: the construction and real estate sector has an abundance of 3D scan data at its disposal, but lacks the tools and knowledge to translate that data into actionable insight. We build that bridge — drawing on the practical expertise of BimBuildings and the science of LiDAR research.
What sets us apart
Practical knowledge from the built environment
ScanPlan was founded by Herwin Kampjes and Raymon Paarhuis — the founders of BimBuildings. That is no coincidental background. BimBuildings works daily on BIM modelling, 3D scanning and digitalisation for the construction sector. That knowledge — what a structural engineer needs, how a contractor works, what a facility manager expects — is built into how ScanPlan is designed. We know what BIM is because we do it every day.
Academic depth in LiDAR and AI
The AI models behind ScanPlan are not off the shelf. They are developed on the basis of academic research into 3D reconstruction, semantic segmentation of point clouds and indoor mapping — conducted in collaboration with the University of Twente and TU Delft. Our research has been published in international scientific journals and recognised with awards at the ISPRS Geospatial Week. That scientific foundation determines how accurate our models are and how we handle complex building situations.
From data to decision — and beyond
Technology is a means to an end. What ultimately matters is what an organisation does with it. ScanPlan is designed around a single question: what does a facility manager, an asset manager or a maintenance team need the next morning to make a decision? That question drives the development of every AI model, every integration and every configuration we build.
Rooted in science, focused on practice
The AI technology behind ScanPlan was developed at the intersection of academic research and construction practice. Our research focuses on the automatic interpretation of LiDAR data in built environments — from semantic segmentation of point clouds to 3D reconstruction and BIM integration.
University of Twente & TU Delft — PhD research (2020) and postdoctoral collaboration within the Department of Earth Observation Science at the University of Twente. The doctoral research was conducted in partnership with NWO, CGI Nederland, Cyclomedia Technology, TU Delft and the Dutch Fire Brigade — with applications in disaster management and navigation in complex buildings.
ISPRS Geospatial Week 2017 — both Best Paper Award and Best Youth Oral Paper Award for research on semantic interpretation of mobile laser scanner point clouds in indoor environments.
ISPRS Annals (2021) — "Point Cloud Based 3D Models for Agent Based Simulations in Social Distancing and Evacuation"
International publications — published in Remote Sensing and Transactions in GIS; more than 440 citations in scientific literature.
That academic foundation is not decorative. It determines how accurate our models are, how we handle complex building situations and how we continue to improve as the field evolves.
The people behind ScanPlan
ScanPlan was founded by Herwin Kampjes and Raymon Paarhuis — the founders of BimBuildings — and Dr. Shayan Nikoohemat, Senior Data Scientist with LiDAR specialisation and Dev Team Lead, who completed his PhD at the University of Twente on indoor 3D reconstruction. They are supported by a dedicated team of developers with expertise in computer vision, cloud infrastructure and BIM integration.
